Meet the Grovers

One of my favorite things is to see the friends and family who share CrossFit Utah Valley with each other. Doing difficult things and committing to better health together can be so rewarding. The Grovers are a great example of of commitment and dedication as a whole family. They are an inspiration, and we are so lucky to have them at CrossFit Utah Valley!

Tell us a little bit about yourself. Do you have a family? Where are you from, where do you work? Aside from CF, what do you enjoy doing?

We are the Grover Family: Keith, Julie, Jacob (14), Landon (11), Max (9), Annie (6), and Ellie (3). We live in Provo. Keith is an administrator at Oak Canyon Junior High in Lindon, as well as a Representative for Provo and Orem in the Utah House of Representatives. Julie is an obstetrician/gynecologist in Provo. The kids are busy, fun kids.

When did you start CrossFit, and what made you decide to stick with it?

Julie: I started in April 2013, inspired by an old high school friend, a colleague at the hospital, and Bob Harper. I had been a runner for years but I was bored and not improving much.  I got hooked on Crossfit pretty much right away. I loved the feeling of finishing a movement or a workout I didn't think I could do. I tried to get Keith to come for over a year. This past summer I put our three boys in the Kids’ and Teens’ classes and they really enjoyed it (well, Jacob didn't exactly ENJOY it but realized it helped him be healthier and less moody). Keith saw the benefits Crossfit had for the boys and finally decided to try it this past fall.  Now he is drinking the Kool-Aid, too. I love picking up the boys from the gym sweaty and HUNGRY.  Our little girls want to come, too, and probably will someday soon.

Keith: I started in October 2014. I loved how I felt exhausted and sore after every workout. I also enjoyed feeling better and stronger a few days later. After about 2 months I could start to see improvements in my skills and that was VERY encouraging.

But what I enjoy more than anything are the COACHES and the camaraderie. All of the coaches are encouraging and critical (in a helpful way).  I can tell that they want to push me and help me do the best that i can and to improve my lifting skills and movement techniques.

Do you like to come in to a particular class?

Julie: Usually 5:45 am before work and kid demands.

Keith: I usually come to the 4:30 class because it is after work AND I get to go with my kids.  I get to see what all of the other classes have done throughout the day and that is very motivating. I also come to the 5:45 a.m. class with the “old guard.”  It is sometimes a little harder to get the body moving in the morning.

What is your favorite CrossFit workout/movement/lift? Which ones do you dislike the most?

Julie:  I like most things with a barbell.  I dislike pull ups and anything that is me vs. my bodyweight.

Keith:  I have ripped my leg up twice on box jumps - so they are DEFINITELY my nemesis.  Burpees also make me want to cry. I like push ups, sit ups, and deadift.

How has CrossFit changed your life?

Julie: I go to bed before 10pm, I don't watch much TV anymore, and my treadmill is getting lonely.

Keith: I have been a runner for more than 10 years - competing in marathons, half marathons and triathlons (even the Ironman). But Crossfit has given me FULL body fitness and I love it.

I eat better and I am able to be stronger in activities that I love, such as wakeboarding and waterskiing.

What are your personal goals in CrossFit?

Julie: I want to stay healthy and happy, fight aging, and do a strict pull up someday.

Keith: My goal is to work hard and have fun and encourage my fellow CrossFitters as they work in their workouts. I would like to improve each month and continue to get stronger and hopefully compete someday if they ever have a 50+ CrossFit category.
